PROJECT DURATION

The project started in December 2016 and finished in February 2017.

RESEARCH

Research done was on contemporary/modern design and ergonomics. What design suites the consumer best? How to create an interactive space which emotionally speaks to the client? What design would help the staff to comfortably and freely interact with the client?

CHALLENGE

One creative challenge was masking the bathrooms. The existing bathrooms opened out into the main area of the salon and could not be relocated. Adding a wall to hide the entrances did not seem like a good design choice and would have made the space feel much smaller. In order to provide a sense of privacy, we instead hung an 18 foot expanse of 10.5 foot high shimmer screen, a finely beaded metal curtain. While achieving its purpose of masking the bathrooms, the elegant beaded wall also illuminates the room and doubles as a visual art piece.

Van Cleef Hair Studio’s passion for excellent service has earned them the reputation of being one of the premier multi-cultural salons in Chicago for more than 25 years. Their staff is expertly trained. At Van Cleef, a talented, well trained, stylist is the architect of a great haircut. Excellence in technique, and excellence in artistic precision are standard requirements at Van Cleef Hair Studio. The salon’s interior stresses modern/contemporary design with strong lines to elaborate a cohesive atmosphere. Rahni, the main stylist, puts customer service ahead of everything else. Some of his clients include Michelle Obama, Carol Mosely-Braun and Allison Payne. Van Cleef is highly respected and a leader in its industry.

DESIGN

Contemporary design is about simplicity. This motif was chosen as the attention is upon the client. The design was modeled towards the consumer’s needs: open space creates a welcoming atmosphere and direct lines created by the furniture, flooring and piping guide the client from one station to the next. A hand crafted beaded wall adds dynamics and culture to the space. The white interior and lighting draws attention to the client, which is the design’s main intention and focus.

Our design was intended to be very modern, with an elegant simplicity. This requires attention to detail and Del Mar provided this along with great customer service.

STATEMENT OF ART

Design and art should be clean and efficient. It should be comfortable to the eye as well as to the soul. A design within a structure should be equally proportionate. Contrast and mono chromatic details are key. Lighting establishes a mood. The interior and exterior design should speak the culture and brand of the company.

INSPIRATION

The inspiration came from a question: “What would be best for Van Cleef Hair Studio’s clients?” Lots of open space was planned and designed to allow Van Cleef’s stylists the ability to move quickly and freely. The motive was to provide Van Cleef’s clients maximum service and comfort.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:

Clients move directly from the door to the reception desk, cloakroom, magazine racks, coffee area, to the bathrooms. Once they are settled in Van Cleef’s staff begins their services. The functional areas of the salon: shampoo bowls, color/chemical prep stations and laundry are organized separately at the rear. Lots of open space in the main area allows the stylist to move freely and to interact with the customer comfortably.
